WHAT’S REQUIRED FOR TRANSITION?

Normal antenna of the decimeter wave TV can be used in order to receive digital TV broadcasting. Antenna can be both outdoor and indoor. The signal being received by antenna will vary on each customer depends on the distance from the radio & TV station.

Customer is required to have digital tuner TV that supports DVB-T2/MPEG-4 standard and multiple PLP mode, or normal analogue TV which will be connected with DVB-T2 tuner digital decoder (set-top box).

The decoder of DVB-T (primary) doesn’t support DVB-T2 standard and please be reminded that an additional facility will be required.

ANTENNA

Outdoor antennas of TV which the most of people currently use are dedicated for metric wave. However, the digital TV distribution is for decimeter wave. In order to receive digital program comfortably, decimeter wave antenna is going to be used.

What is the difference between wave distributions over metric or decametricrange?

Live TV signal is distributed by VHF wave at 48MHz-862MHz. Frequency band is divided into 5 ranges of 2 groups, which are:

  • Metric waves band (МВ) or VHF I,II.III (47-180MHz)
  • Decametric waves band (DMB) or UHF IV,V(470-862MHz)

The countries of the world vary on distribution of live TV channels. According to the standard, which is valid in Mongolia, metric wave includes 1-12 channels and decametric wave includes 21-60 channels.

If your TV has DVB-T2 digital decoder, you can buy antenna switch and connect DVB antenna, which is for current analogue cable TV and live TV. For example:

If you live in a house, you can place your antenna on the roof, on balcony or install on window frame or wall. In order to install the antenna, mast & bracket will be required. Mast can use metal tube with diameter of 40-50mm and needs to be installed as wind-resistant. The antenna should be adjusted on the best place to receive tele-signal and be fastened down in assistance of bracket. Any location with the best signal can be selected for antenna if it’s on the roof.

An example of antenna to receive live TV signal is shown on picture.

Is it possible to receive high quality live digital TV signal without antenna?

If you’re close to the distributor on a place as direct-to-be-seen and the signal is good and stable, you can be without antenna, which can be replaced with a bit of cable wire.

TV

Analogie TV, which is currently in use among Mongolia, is not suitable to receive live digital TV signal.

You need to have digital tuner TV that supports DVB-T2/MPEG-4 standard and MULTIPLE PLP mode or decoder that supports DVB-T2/MPEG-4 standard and analogue TV which will be connected to the decoder. Decametric wave antenna will be used, which can be any of collective or private. Your TV and/or decoder needs to be configured as mentioned on the manual in order to receive live digital TV signal.

General instruction of configuration:

  • The plug at the end of antenna cable should be connected to TV (if the TV has a tuner inside), or the digital decoder.
  • Automatic search for channels – at this time relevant live digital channels will be selected. If you select manual search, channel frequency is required to be selected (for example, the frequency of the 34th TV channel is 685MHz etc.)
  • Most digital TV and decoder has an indicator to determine signal level and quality. It’s dedicated for your antenna to be placed on the most optimal place.

In rural area, the customer can be far away from live digital TV distribution, thus an outdoor, decametric antenna with high gain coefficient will be used and will be required to be placed as high as possible.

You’re recommended to make sure the TVs on Mongolian market support DVB-T2 standard.

DECODER

In order to receive live digital TV broadcasting, a decoder to receive live digital TV is required as well as decametric wave antenna and it has names of decoder, receiver and set-top-box.

Modern digital TV that supports DVB-T2 can be used instead of live digital decoder and analogue TV.

However, you are recommended not to rush to buy any equipment before commencement of the live digital TV network.

You are also recommended to wait to buy such equipment until live digital TV broadcasting came to your local area (soum, district, khoroo/bagh) and review the equipment you want to buy.

The decoder of live digital TV (or receiver, set-top-box STB) is a small equipment dedicated to receive live digital signal and transmit to your analogue TV. You need to make sure the following things if you are to buy a decoder, which are:

  • Whether to be able to read and recognize smart cards of paid services (CAM module);
  • Whether to be able to record and read through USB (universal service bus) port; and
  • Whether to be able to receive high definition (HD-high definition)tele channels etc.

The technical advances of decoder is certain to be reflected on its price.

You are recommended to pay attention on whether there is a maintenance service available for your decoder.

DVB-T2 decoder allows the customers to watch live digital TV broadcasting through the current analogue TVs and it’s not require special experience, practice or knowledge on configuration and installation. It’s easy and comfortable for any user to use that decoder.
